Messy Stories publishes retellings of true, first-person stories. This page explains how a story gets here, what we do to it, and what we promise about it.

How stories are chosen

Every story on this site started as a real person telling their own story on camera. We watch far more than we publish. A story makes the cut when it’s genuinely theirs to tell, complete enough to retell honestly, and the kind of drama our audience actually cares about — betrayal, marriage, family, survival. Stories that can’t clear those bars don’t run.

How articles are written

Each article is a retelling grounded in the storyteller’s own account — we work from what they actually said, and we don’t invent names, dates, dollar amounts, or endings. When a storyteller leaves something unanswered, the article says so instead of filling the gap. The reactions, verdicts, and “our take” sections are ours: two people with opinions, not a wire service. Short quotes are the storyteller’s own words, marked as such.

What we won’t publish

Some stories are off the table no matter how many views they’d get: stories where a minor is at the center of violence, abuse, or exploitation; content that exists to shock rather than to be understood; and stories we can’t retell without putting an identifiable private person at risk. When a story falls into one of these categories after publication, we take the page down.

Credit and anonymization

We credit the original storyteller wherever we have a handle to name — you’ll see the source on every article. At the same time, we change or strip identifying details of the other people in a story (names, employers, addresses). The storyteller chose to tell their story; the people in it didn’t.

Corrections and removals

If you’re the subject of a story and something is materially wrong — or you want identifying details removed — email submit@messystories.com. We review every request and act on the reasonable ones quickly. Copyright has its own lane: our DMCA page.

Advertising

The site is supported by advertising. Ads never influence which stories run or what our takes say — no story on this site was chosen, framed, or softened for an advertiser. Details are in our terms and privacy policy.
