First Episode, No Script, No Filter
We are not going to pretend this went perfectly — we literally lost the first recording because we forgot to turn the mics on. But we came back, hit record again, and gave you everything we had. No teleprompter, no talking points, just Curtis and Honade going back and forth on the questions the Messy Fam has been asking for.
This is Episode 1 of Messy Talks, and the whole point is simple: you get a man's take, you get a woman's take, and you get to decide where you land. The comment section is open and we are reading every single thing you drop in there.
Is It Selfish to Put Yourself First?
We kicked things off with a question that sounds simple until it is not: should you pour into your own cup before pouring into others? Curtis came in strong — if your battery is dead, the people who depend on you are getting the worst version of you, and that is not a sacrifice, that is a problem. Honade backed that up and pushed it further, talking about what it actually looks like when someone gives and gives until there is nothing left and nobody checks on them.
But here is where it got real. Curtis brought in his own story — being the person his family always runs to, the one they call when they need something, and the silence in between. He made a sharp distinction between choosing yourself because you are full and choosing yourself because the people around you only show up when they need a favor. Those are two very different conversations, and we had both of them.
Cutting Off Family, Success and Envy, and Loyalty vs. Peace
We covered a lot of ground in this one. On cutting off family, both of us agreed that guilt is almost always manufactured — put there by the same people who caused the damage in the first place. Curtis talked about what it means to be the so-called black sheep, and why forgiveness and reconciliation are not the same thing. That part hit different.
The success conversation got personal too. We talked about what it feels like when people who were nowhere to be found suddenly reappear once your name starts meaning something. And on loyalty versus peace, we did not agree on everything — Curtis was direct that peace wins every time, while Honade brought up trauma bonding and why people stay in situations that drain them long past the point they should have left. We also got into whether your partner should come before your family, gentle parenting versus traditional parenting, and whether you can truly love someone and still walk away for good.
Why You Need to Hear the Full Episode
We touched on seven different topics in this first episode and almost every single one turned into something bigger than the original question. The parenting conversation alone went places we were not expecting, and the exchange about staying in a relationship until you hate someone versus leaving while love is still there is the kind of thing you need to hear in full to really feel it.

“If you can't call somebody when you're up and tell them, you probably shouldn't be hanging around that person.”
“You can love people from a distance, but just because you love somebody doesn't mean they have the same access to you.”
The debate
- Is choosing yourself first selfish, or just necessary?
- Why do we feel guilty for distancing from family?
- Does success change people, or expose them?
- Should your partner come before your family?
- Loyalty or peace — which one wins?
